Our Keynote Speaker: Dr. Karen McDowell

“You Are Not Who You Were: Welcoming The Gifts of Struggle” Saturday April 9, 2022 at 5:00 PM CST

Description: As front line workers, interpreters bear witness to a great deal of suffering, while simultaneously experiencing their own personal ups and downs.

In this session, attendees will have the opportunity to explore the deeper meaning of struggling, suffering, and growth, and will be invited to identify how their own hardships might have been understood and integrated within the self.

Participants will be encouraged to explore and develop their own values around wisdom, meaning, and resilience using the specific strategies provided in this workshop.


Dr. Aiden Hirshfield

“Why Identity Language Matters” Friday April 8, 2022 at 6:00 PM CST

In this workshop Dr. Hirshfield will provide training on working with transgender, non-binary, and queer individuals and how to approach specific terminology with cultural sensitivity.

Participants will be able to identify and define terms related to gender identity and expression, analyze their use of identity language and how it can impact their interpreting decisions.

Participants will also develop a more in-depth understanding of the queer community and how best to work with queer hearing and Deaf people.

“Imposter Syndrome Part One and Two” Saturday April 9, 2022 at 9:00 AM & 11:00 AM CST

Have you ever doubted your abilities or felt like a fraud? Are you afraid to step into leadership roles or mentoring roles because you don’t know if you are ready? Maybe you are finding yourself turning down assignments you may be qualified to take?

This type of insecurity is common and pervasive in our society, it is Imposter Syndrome.

This workshop is focused on providing you with the tools to understand and work through Imposter Syndrome.

In this workshop, we’ll approach our dialogue hands-on, tackling the internal critic that plagues us all.


Leslie Allen

“Roles of Interpreters in the IEP Process” Saturday April 9, 2022 at 9:00 AM CST

Description: In this workshop Leslie Allen will provide an overview of regional day schools for the Deaf, why it was established, and how it benefits students in Texas.

She will go over IEP terms, documentation that is done in the meetings, and what to expect during the meetings. She will also do in-depth into what the interpreters role is in the meetings and best practices.

Participants will understand how the IEP process works and what to expect in IEP meetings, as well as analyze their role in the process of development and implementation of an IEP.

Participants will develop vocabulary specific to IEP meetings and how to interpret concepts related to the educational setting.


Monique Champagne & Anjelica Thompson

“Meaningful Self Care: A Lifestyle” Saturday April 9, 2022 at 11:00 AM CST

This workshop will provide support for participants in the form of an educational and experiential training opportunity.

The format includes a presentation on the concept of and barriers to meaningful self-care, completing a self-assessment, forming a personal plan for self-care, group discussion of process, and group practice of progressive muscle relaxation.

In this workshop, Monique and Anjelica will define meaningful self-care, describe healthy boundaries and their significance to meaningful self-care, as well as identify barriers to the practice of self-care. Additionally, the group will discuss the relevance to personal care and assess current practices of self-care.

Finally, the group will create personal plan for focused self-care and action items on how to apply these plans and practices.

“Being A Team Player” Saturday April 9, 2022 at 2:00 PM CST

This workshop is a hands-on approach to teaming. In this workshop, we will go over best practices, our code of professional conduct, and work to provide you with the tools to team effectively.

Throughout the workshop, we will dive into soft skills and reflect on our own teaming preferences.

This will be very dialogue-heavy, with lots of opportunities to apply what you learn. Then we will dive into ethical dilemmas.


Monique Champagne

“Trauma-Informed Interpreting Practices” Saturday April 9, 2022 at 2:00 PM CST

In this workshop, Monique will give an in-depth look into grief and trauma therapy. This workshop will provide participants with the ability to work through the stages of trauma processing and how those may impact interpreting choices.

Throughout this workshop, present individuals will be able to discuss, collaborate, and evaluate the grieving process in order to gain the skills to effectively interpret in group and individual therapy settings.

Participants will recognize Judith Herman’s stages of trauma recovery, and will formulate approaches to interpreting for individuals who are grieving.

Participants will recommend best practices for interpreting in trauma-informed therapy settings, evaluate and apply information and skills learned in the workshop in small group settings.

In these spaces, attendees will explore fundamentals and quick tips on how to best navigate these conference spaces from a professional perspective.
